If you have ever felt like transporting yourself to a magical, cozy world of wooded landscape, then the Pomona Winery is definitely the place for you. With their garden picnic area and covered decks, you may have to pinch yourself to make sure you are not in a fairy tale. The gorgeous winery also has the advantage of being one of the founding members of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Their exquisite non-grape fruit wines are all crafted from their own locally grown fruits and attract travelers from all over the world. It comes as no surprise, then, that Pomona is also one of the wineries on the Shawnee Wine Trail that is most popular.
Owned by George Majka and Jane Payne, the Pomona winery has grown exponentially since its inception in 1982. With no vineyards available to produce a proper grape wine, Majka and Payne decided to craft wines with locally grown fruits such as blueberries, peaches, apples, and strawberries. And it is clear to see that this tradition has still persisted, in fact 99% of the fruits used in their wines come from the nearby Southern Illinois establishment. Hailing as one of the best wineries in Southern Illinois, the Pomona winery estate has not forgotten its humble beginnings and offer free wine tasting for their customers.
When you step foot in the winery, without missing a beat, a friendly employee will warmly welcome you and ask you to grab a bar stool. What follows next would be a fun and educational tasting experience at that you will never see anywhere else in the Shawnee wine trail. What’s more is that Pomona is perhaps the only winery in the Southern Illinois wine trail that ships its wines across the country, so if you are craving that tantalizing fruity taste of the wines served at Pomona, you can rest assured!
In addition to its friendly environment, Pomona also offers you a chance to choose between varieties of wines with fruity undertones. Their wines have been praised and awarded multiple times in over 20 years, especially their premium Golden Oak Aged Reserve which was also awarded the “Best in Class” in 2014. For dessert, you may want to pair your sweet dish with something a little more unique like Once In A Blue Moon Blueberry Dessert Wine. So do not forget to visit this gorgeous establishment and cozy up with a fruity wine.
