5 Minute Wine Trail Guide

Having an adventure can be as simple as planning your next activity or as complicated as working out a whole day’s itinerary. This guide will point you in the right direction. Start planning your trip with this quick-fire guide to wineries, lodging, and activities here.

The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and the Southern Illinois Wine Trail are some of the most popular in the country. With so many wineries and vineyards to taste award winning fine wine, it’s hard to choose which to go to first. We recommend the Blue Sky Vineyards and Alto Vineyards which are the anchors of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail.

  • Blue Sky Vineyards is one of the larger and most popular wineries providing excellent food and award-winning Illinois wines surrounded by Tuscan architecture.

  • Alto Vineyards is the oldest winery on the wine trail with over 500 National and International awards. They are one of the founding members of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, and they feature live music most weekends.

  • Pomona Winery brings a unique taste to the wine trail with their non-grape wines. Located in a quiet venue, with several award-winning choices, their wines are made from locally grown fruits.

Now that you’ve had your fill of wine, I’m sure you’d like to have a plate of delicious homemade food. Well, Southern Illinois has some of the most mouthwatering eateries around the wine trails. Some of our favorites to eat at are 17th Street Barbecue and the Brickhouse Grill.

  • 17th Street Barbecue has won many awards from “Best Ribs in the U.S.” to a place on “101 Best Restaurants in America.” They offer a selection of homemade choices from their signature ribs to their championship beef brisket.

  • Brick House Grill of Anna, IL features a menu of attractive dishes that pair good with your choice of wine from the wine trail. Their atmosphere is sure to please with natural brick walls in a cozy setting.

  • Yellow Moon Café hosts seasonal daily specials as well as a menu that changes weekly which compliments the fresh local meats and produce. Find time to come in and enjoy the local music, as well, as they host music events.

After dining on quality food and exquisite wine, it’s time for a good night’s sleep. Whether you’re in the mood to spend the night in a rustic cabin or if you’d much rather stay at a bed & breakfast, here is what we recommend. For cabins we suggest a stay at Rustic Hideaway Cabins or for a B&B, we suggest Train Inn.

  • Rustic Hideaway Cabins offers a cozy, private cabin to stay at in Jonesboro, IL. Take this time of relaxation to explore Southern Illinois by taking a hike , going ziplining , or just staying back and enjoying the hot tub.

  • Train Inn B&B provides each guest with top-notch service and a warm breakfast. Take in the nostalgic atmosphere as you relax in a 1920s bungalow and get out and take a trip to Bald Knob Cross or Giant City Stables .

  • Best Western of Carbondale is minutes from the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail where you can relax at an affordable price, with a complimentary hot breakfast and exceptional service.

We hope you have a great time and soak in all the beauty that Southern Illinois has to offer.
